Kia ora, I am a student at Mairehau High School, Welcome - Haere Mai. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note my work may include spelling or other errors because some of it will be my first drafts. I would like to get your feedback - comments, thoughts, questions and ideas to help me Learn Create Share.
I chose this bird because the dove has a similar personality to me: doves are shy, they are calm and have a loving personality (e.g. they are very loyal to their partner and caring parents).
What is the dove afraid of?
Depending on where the dove lives, it can have several natural predators. If it lives in an urban environment natural “enemies” could be cats, dogs, possibly possums. Doves that live in the wild could be hunted by dingos, crocodiles, wild cats, etc. As doves are very adaptable and can live in almost every country, their natural predators can vary as well.
Is your bird smart?
The dove is quite a smart bird. You can train certain types of doves or pigeons (both belong to the same bird “family” called columbidae) to deliver mail; these birds are called carrier pigeons. As they have a great sense of direction and will always fly to their home destination, you can tie a piece of mail to their feet and they will carry it home even over long distances.
Has your bird been a symbol or an icon?
In christinity the dove has always been a symbol for peace or even hope. For instance, in the story of Noah and his arch, Noah sends out a dove to find land after the catastrophic flood. The dove then returns with a twig in its beak; hence, it is a messenger of hope and new beginnings. Furthermore, the dove has been a logo for the beauty company “Dove”.
What is a group of doves called?
A group of doves has many different names, such as a "bevy", a "cote", a "dole", a "dule" or a "flight" of doves.
Summary
Firstly, doves are caring. Secondly, doves have different natural predators depending on their habitat (e.g. wild cats, dogs, possums, crocodiles, etc). Next, the dove has been used as a “mailing service” in the past because of their sense of direction. Additionally, the dove is a symbol for peace in christianity. Lastly, a group of doves can be called many different names, e.g. “flight”,ect.
